The Germans scored a hat-trick over England, but this time it’s not bad news for our football team! Mercedes claimed three major motoring awards at the World Car Awards for 2015 at the New York Auto Show last month. Big Motoring World reviews love German cars, and we’re sure you do too. Which makes it extremely good news, car fans!
German efficiency on point again
Germany are sat at the top of the proverbial tree in the car industry, with Mercedes winning the World Performance Car, World Luxury Car and the coveted World Car of the Year trophies.
The AMG-GT and the S-Class Coupe are valued at around £100,000 so we know they are probably out of the reach of most of us. But the C-Class is valued at around £27,000 brand new – a lot closer to our price range and is certainly worth looking at if you’re looking to treat yourself this year. Particularly if you buy second hand, as we will ensure you get the best available car at an affordable price.
C-Class, Grade A
Similar to the BMW 3-Series and the Audi A4, the Mercedes C-Class is in the competitive compact executive sector. There are lots of new features since the old model, making it probably the best value Merc that we’ve seen. Mercedes claim that it’s up to 20% more fuel efficient than the previous model too.
We particularly like the Mercedes C220 BlueTEC Sport – looks count for a lot in the car park and this definitely delivers in this respect. Taking inspiration from the brand leading S-Class limousine, the C-Class’ neat lines, sculpted sides and back-swept headlamps provide a slick, sporty look. It wouldn’t be a sports car if it didn’t have 17-inch wheels, along with chrome treatment and LED lights which help it look elegant yet racer-like.
Inside there is a luxurious cabin setting new standards for the class. High-quality materials and a beautifully designed dash have taken influence from the S-Class. The Air-Con has a tactile-metal finish and the leather steering wheel is multi-functional as well as looking so smart.
Reliable and Practical
The new C-Class is the first built using Mercedes’ new rear-wheel drive architecture (MRA) which uses around 50% aluminium – a 40% increase on the last model – meaning there’s a 70kg weight loss on the body. Overall it weighs around 100kg less, which all helps improve the driving experience.
A 2.1-litre diesel engine provides plenty of power and ensures competitive fuel figures. Mercedes are renowned for their reliability and build quality. As you’d expect, the C-Class is loaded with regular safety kit, including seven airbags, a driver tiredness monitor and tyre-pressure warning. It’s been given a five-star Euro NCAP crash test rating so you can drive in complete safety.
There’s also plenty of head and leg room in the front, with comfy seats and a better driving position alignment and vision overall. Heated seats and a sat-nav are also included in the sports cars so you have everything you could possibly need.
One thing’s for sure, the rest of the car market seem furious with Mercedes and will definitely want to bounce back next year. Who knows, can China or India develop a quirky little car that’s cheaper to build, buy and run? We expect that they will certainly try!
