Dr Dieter Zetsche, the Chairman of Mercedes-Benz’ parent company Daimler’s Board of Directors, recently appeared at the Berlin-based 2016 IFA Consumer Electronics Show. During the event, Zetsche revealed that future Mercedes-Benz cars will serve as personal assistants to their drivers.

According to Zetsche, Mercedes-Benz are developing self-driving cars which will improve quality of life. These vehicles will complete tasks that people don’t typically enjoy, monitor driver well-being and make travelling more efficient by sharing information with one another for parking purposes.

Working as assistants

Commenting on this project, he was quoted by Autocar, an industry publication, saying: “We’ve already begun testing community-based parking in Stuttgart together with our partners at Bosch… It works using car sensors that can find empty spaces along a road and then share the information with the Mercedes back-end database. That information is then shared with other Mercedes cars.”

Every connected Mercedes-Benz car, he added, will know how to find the nearest convenient parking space in future. With this system, Mercedes-Benz’s cars will soon be able to drive themselves to their owners while further down the line, they will be able to drive and park without any human input.

In other words sometime in the distant future, the carmaker’s vehicles will be able to carry out tasks like picking up kids from school autonomously, leaving the owner free to live their lives. Going on, Zetsche said: “Everyone is talking about digitalisation and connected cars… But software alone will not be able to take you from A to B. It is the total package that will take you from A to B.”

Quality time machines

Elaborating, the Daimler Chairman explaining: “It’s our goal that a passenger gets out of a Mercedes in better condition than when they got in… The car will use its sensors to monitor the health and wellbeing of passengers, and then adjust settings to improve your situation and blood pressure.”

Turning to the distant future, Zetsche revealed: “We do not know exactly what the car will look like in 10 years from now, but we do know it will be of greater value for all of us… That’s why our cars have begun to become quality time machines, to hand back time to let you do what you want. But that time will always include driving a car for pure pleasure. We will certainly never forget that at Mercedes.”
