The new app for smartphone and tablet has the technology to tell you exactly how much battery your vehicle has left. It is also able to point out where your nearest energy point is so that you can schedule your next stop.
Just like a running app, users can share statistics of driving distance and efficiency of previous journeys with the BMW iCommunity. It uses factors including Co2 output and fuel usage to develop your latest journey’s stats which helps to improve your efficient driving habits.
The free app can also lock or unlock your car wirelessly, as well as dictate the temperature of the car ahead of your next journey. It can blow your horn and locate your vehicle if you forgot where you parked earlier, but Big Motoring World’s favourite feature is the Google local search – it can transfer your smartphone’s address destination straight over to your inbuilt car satnav.
Sign of things to come?
Whilst the app currently only works for BMW’s i cars, this could be the latest new trend in luxury cars – particularly hybrid ones and we could start to see this technology roll out across many luxury brands in the coming years.
BMW claims the i8 hybrid sports car can achieve 134.5 miles per gallon, and the electric i3 hatch achieves as many as 211 miles when equipped with a range extender. Whilst these statistics may appear unrealistic when driving in usual UK conditions, it certainly is a promising prospect for energy efficient cars and fuel consumption in the future for the UK economy.
The new i Remote app is free to download, but users must be signed up to ‘BMW Assist’ in order for it to work with their car. My BMW Remote App is available to download on Apple’s App Store and Android’s Google Play.
