The Mercedes Benz CLS is back and it’s got a fresh new look
The CLS is one of the jewels in the crown of Mercedes Benz’s luxury coupe portfolio. It’s unmistakable profile and extensive range of options make this a machine of choice. Now onto a third generation, does the CLS retain the recipe that made it so special when it first burst on to the scene all of those years ago?
That flowing shape, that imposing grille and those oh so comfortable interiors. The CLS quickly became a popular addition to the Mercedes Benz portfolio when it launched way back in 2004 and in that time, had its fair share of prolific owners. Ex-Formula One supremo Bernie Ecclestone had one and famously had his wheels stolen in London.
The CLS oozes class and sophistication but what is to be made of this new iteration? Visually it retains that instantly recognisable shape, it’s plunging silhouette retains those imposing curves and importantly retains that prominent Mercedes Benz grill. The front and rear aprons have seen revisions and, whereas before the CLS may have been angular in places, this 2018 model appears to have these edges somewhat rounded and helps aid a clear departure between it and the outgoing generation.
The new CLS also features a similar headlight design to that of the new A-Class. A clear nod that this design element is set to run through the whole Mercedes Benz product line up in the not so distant future.
For all of its luxurious interiors and refinement, the new CLS is set to come in an AMG tuned AMG 53 variant which promises a tantalising 429 bhp from it’s 3.0-litre inline six-cylinder engine. Whilst on paper this looks set to be a fast car, it is somewhat hindered by its curb weight of nearly two tonnes. However, weight issues aside, in the cold light of day would you, A), buy this car for its performance or B). use as a machine to waft around in. Cruising effortless in style, long distance drives look set to be a breeze in this car.
Making this car even more intuitive from a drivers point of view is the addition of Mercedes Benz latest infotainment displays. A masterclass in what can be achieved from a digital dashboard, all essential information is displayed on two large screens with one replacing the traditional instrument cluster.
Does the CLS dilute the recipe of the outgoing generation? Not at all. Fresh contemporary twists and subtle redesigns bring this car very much up to date and helps to create a platform for an exciting future for the model.
